Macau is a peninsula and islands, located just west of Hong Kong, that have been a Portuguese colony, until their "return to China" in 1999.
(Similarly, Hong Kong was a British colony, returned to China in 1997.)
We traveled to Macau via a TurboJet boat, with sister-in-law (Sanwa), her sister (Edith), and their friend (Jessie.)
We spent three full days in Macau, exploring the sights and staying at the Golden Dragon hotel/casino.
Our hotel......The price was right. |
The most fabulous casino on the peninsula seems to be the Casino Grand Lisboa (named after Lisbon, in Portugal.)
****Notice the BLUE sky, with white clouds, something that we have not experienced for months, in China!!!
The casinos are all more spectacular at night. Macau is trying to become the
"Las Vegas of SE Asia."
The "Water Cube Casino" is built similarly to the Olympic Water Cube in Beijing, except that it is much smaller and contains only slot machines and gaming tables.
"The Sands" was our favorite casino, though we did limit ourselves to $ 7 each (U.S.) per day. We're definitely not in the high-roller category, but it was fun! |
The Sands did have some of the old-style Dollar slot machines, with the actual rolling "drums", non-computerized, double or triple diamonds, and
Bars or Sevens or Cherries,
for pleny of small pay-backs, to keep a person playing! I like the non-progressive machines, where you can simply play one dollar at a time, and watch one line to win!
(Do I sound like a gambler? NOT!)
We visited Taipa Island, where the biggest, fanciest Las Vegas-style casinos are being built.
The shuttle-bus, back-and-forth to the island, was free, of course:
My favorite activity at ANY casino is to attend the shows. (I learned this love for theatrics from my Mom, Reva, I am sure!)
At the Venetian, Cirque Du Soleil was performing a dance and music show, with plenty of performers "coming down out of the ceiling of the theater." Parts of the show were spectacular.
The ballet, acrobatics, gymnastics, jugglers, upside-down bicyclists, roller skaters, Hawai'ian-style fire dancers, and special effects were great! |
We also visited the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino, where they had these famous music lyrics on the wall behind the check-in counter.
Macau has a Tower, similar to the Space Needle in Seattle. The difference is that you can
BUNGY (Bungee in the U.S.) JUMP
off the tower! (We opted not to!)
Can you see the jumping platform? |
Supposedly, this is the "world's Highest Bungy Jump!"
Hooray!! .....for really strong guys!
Chris and Paula love Science and Space Museums, and we found yet another one in Macau! We watched a 3-D, I-MAX movie about solar flares and the sun! AWESOME!
Scooters (many electric!) are the main means of transportation in Macau! Wonderful, with neither traffic nor parking problems! |
