The Big Buddha
We went to Lantau Island to see the really-big Buddha, made of concrete, and built in recent years, on top of a big hill, as a tourist attraction. The Buddha reminded us of "Mother Russia" along the Volga River; "Christ the Redeemer" in Rio de Janiero, Brazil; and even our own "Statue of Liberty."
Pretty impressive Statue....I apparently don't understand the Buddhist Religion, though, because the Chinese people are incredible meat-eaters. Seems a direct contradiction to Buddhist beliefs...... |
We took a long cable car ride to get to the Big Buddha Park. |
There were soldier statues, too, with hats for the various years of the Chinese Zodiak. "The Year of the Rat" reminded us of our RAT (Riders Association of Triumph) membership, back home in Washington.
I was born during "The Year of the Horse", while Chris is a Dragon. Statues like these are very common in Hong Kong.
Compared to the peaceful Buddhas, some of the Taoist gods seem pretty scary!
The temples can be beautiful, however, with so many orchids, celebrating Chinese New Year and Spring Festival. |
Mandarin Orange Trees were as prolific as our Christmas Trees. The tiny oranges remind people of GOLD, as the holiday has lots to do with money and good fortune. |
2011
is
the Year of the Rabbit!
(Sanwa and Paula)
These are special "good luck" fruits.....with rabbits. |
RABBITS, RABBITS, EVERYWHERE !! |
